Mighty Mule Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

We repair and replace Mighty Mule keypads and intercom units across Los Angeles, and we keep the most common Mighty Mule keypad models on the truck so we’re not making you wait on a parts order. Installed replacement for a Mighty Mule keypad or intercom in Los Angeles typically runs $180 to $340 depending on the model and wiring condition, and most of these jobs are done in under an hour. The way owners usually discover the problem is simple: the keypad stops accepting the code on the third or fourth try, or the intercom crackles so badly you can’t tell a delivery driver from your neighbor. One day it works, the next it doesn’t, and now the gate only opens from the clicker inside the house.

Call (877) 610-2993

We’re an independent shop, not affiliated with Mighty Mule, but we’ve been servicing their equipment around Los Angeles since it started showing up on suburban driveways. What that means for you: we know which keypads pair with which control boards, and we know which ones were never going to last through a Los Angeles summer anyway. If you’re standing at your gate right now wondering whether to call, call us at (877) 610-2993. A live person answers. Hal Gatewood’s name is on the shop, and the shop is down the road, not in another time zone.

Which Mighty Mule Models This Applies To

Mighty Mule has put out a few different keypad and intercom designs over the years, and they are not interchangeable. The MMKPM keypad is the older square faceplate model, usually wired directly to the control board with four low-voltage wires. The FM145 and FM148 replacements are the newer weather-sealed units with the blue backlit keys. The Mighty Mule intercom line, including the FM136 and the wireless intercom add-ons, runs on separate frequencies and won’t talk to a standard keypad circuit.

Before you order anything, check the inside of the battery compartment or the back of the faceplate. Mighty Mule prints the model number there in tiny gray lettering, and that number is the only reliable way to match a replacement. A keypad from an FM500 system will not behave on an FM200 control board, even if the plugs look close. We’ve unwired more than a few Los Angeles gates where somebody forced a connector that wasn’t meant to fit, and the board fried six months later.

The OEM-versus-aftermarket decision on Mighty Mule parts is worth being honest about. Mighty Mule-branded keypads carry a premium and sometimes a shipping delay. There are solid weather-rated aftermarket keypads that work cleanly with most Mighty Mule boards, and there are cheap ones with silicone membranes that crack in the first Los Angeles heat wave. We stock both OEM Mighty Mule and the aftermarket units we’ve tested and will actually stand behind. If we wouldn’t put it on our own gate, we won’t put it on yours.

Signs Your Mighty Mule Keypad & Intercom Is Failing

  • The code works, then stops working, then works again. This is almost always moisture getting into the keypad housing or a corroded terminal at the control board. In Los Angeles, the marine layer does more damage than rain does, because it sits on the electronics every morning for months. The fix is usually a new keypad and a re-terminated connection at the board.
  • You have to press the keys hard, or some keys don’t respond at all. The silicone button pad inside the keypad wears out or tears. It’s not a programming issue. A keypad that needs a hammer tap to register is done, and no amount of battery-changing will bring it back.
  • The intercom buzzes loudly at the house unit, even when nobody is at the gate. That’s a short in the wire run or a failing capacitor in the intercom amp. The call button at the gate may still click, but the static drowns out the voice.
  • The gate opens on its own at random times. On Mighty Mule systems, a failing keypad can send ghost signals to the control board. It’s not your neighbor cloning your code; it’s your own keypad dying and firing when it shouldn’t be. This is also a safety issue, and worth addressing the same day it starts.
  • The keypad lights up but the gate never moves. The keypad is probably fine, and the fault is in the control board or the wiring between the keypad and the board. We test the keypad on its own before swapping parts, which saves you from paying for a keypad you didn’t need.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the honest Los Angeles pricing picture for Mighty Mule keypad and intercom repair as of 2026:

  • Keypad swap, basic hardwired model: $180 to $240 installed, including the part
  • Keypad swap, weather-sealed or wireless model: $240 to $310 installed, including the part
  • Intercom unit repair or replacement, single-station: $220 to $340 installed, including the part
  • Wiring repair between keypad/intercom and control board: $90 to $160 depending on the run length and accessibility

The range comes down to two things: which generation of Mighty Mule equipment you have, and whether the wiring at the gate is still sound. If the wire run is buried and shot, we don’t bury another one and hope. We run new low-voltage wire in conduit where it matters, and we tell you the price before we pull a single foot.

Every job we do carries the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the keypad we install fails or the connection doesn’t hold, one call brings us back. No runaround. And you’ll know the full price before we start. The number we quote is the number you pay, period. We don’t do door-price surprises. Hal Gatewood has been doing this in Los Angeles since 2001, and he would rather fix your gate than explain why somebody else’s invoice grew between the driveway and the mailbox.

DIY or Call Us?

Keypad and intercom wiring is low voltage, which means the shock risk is low. But the frustration risk is not. The gotcha with Mighty Mule is that the control board stores its programming in volatile memory, and a short wire or a crossed terminal during a DIY swap can wipe the board’s settings or damage the relay. We’ve come behind enough DIY attempts in Los Angeles to know what a Mighty Mule control board looks like after a homeowner touches the wrong two wires to the wrong two terminals.

What you can safely do: check the keypad batteries if your model is wireless, clean the faceplate with a dry cloth, and confirm the gate opens from the primary remote. That remote working while the keypad doesn’t tells us the control board is likely fine. What you shouldn’t do: open the control board housing and start poking around with a multimeter if you’re not sure which terminal is which. One crossed connection on a Mighty Mule board can take out the whole opener, and then your $200 keypad fix becomes a $900 board replacement.

If you’re not sure what you’re looking at, call (877) 610-2993 and describe what the keypad is doing. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it sounds like a keypad, an intercom, or a control board issue. Estimates are free, and there’s no trip charge inside the county.
