BFT Gate Motor & Opener in Los Angeles: What to Know First

We provide independent BFT gate motor and opener repair and installation throughout Los Angeles, and most BFT service calls are diagnosed and fixed the same day. A typical BFT opener repair runs $240 to $480 in LA, and we quote the full price before any wrench touches your gate. This page is for homeowners whose BFT gate has started acting up, is dead entirely, or needs a new motor because the old one gave up.

Call (877) 610-2993

Hal Gatewood has worked on BFT equipment in Los Angeles since 2001, and his crew sees a lot of what other shops miss. Call (877) 610-2993 and a live person picks up. If it’s after hours, you still get a person. Not a voicemail tree.

How BFT Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

BFT builds a solid motor, but Los Angeles has a way of finding every weak point. Here’s what we actually see in the field, and what we do when we find it.

  • Control board capacitor failure in BFT Ares and Deimos series. The capacitor is often the first thing to go, especially after a grid surge or heat wave. In the San Fernando Valley, we see these fail every August. The board itself is usually fine. We test the capacitor, replace it with a correctly rated part, and leave the board alone. That’s a $40 part and an honest repair, not a $500 board swap.
  • Limit switch drift on BFT Phobos and Icarus swing motors. The gate stops an inch too soon or overtravels and slams the stop. The internal limit cams wear or the set screws back off from vibration. We reset the limits, tighten the hardware, and adjust the motor’s built-in obstruction sensing. Then we run it through fifty cycles to make sure it holds.
  • Gearbox wear on BFT hydraulic operators without fluid service. BFT hydraulic units like the Sub and Kustos lines will cook their gearbox if the hydraulic fluid was never changed. At around five to seven years in LA’s heat, the fluid breaks down, the pump works harder, and the gears take the abuse. We drain the old fluid, inspect the gears, and if they’re not scored, we refill and go. If they’re pitted, we replace the gear set. Most shops skip the fluid and quote a whole new operator.
  • Battery backup failure from the charger, not the battery. On BFT slide systems with battery backup, homeowners assume the battery died. About half the time, the charger on the board stops sending voltage. We test the charger output before touching the battery. If the board’s charger is dead, the fix is a board-level repair or a new board. We won’t sell you a $250 battery when the real problem is on the board.
  • Photocell and safety edge miswiring after somebody else’s install. We get called out for BFT gates that reverse for no reason or refuse to close at all. More often than not, a previous installer wired the photocells in series with the safety edge, or used the wrong gauge wire, or buried the wire without conduit. The gate thinks something is always in the way. We trace the wiring, fix the terminations, shield the low-voltage run where needed, and the gate behaves again. This is the kind of mess Hal genuinely enjoys untangling.

Our BFT Gate Motor & Opener Process

Here’s how a BFT job goes at Gatewood Fence & Gate, from your first call to the final test.

  1. 1
You call, a person answers. We ask what the gate is doing or not doing. If it’s an emergency, we head over. If not, we schedule a time that actually works for you.
  2. 2
On-site diagnosis. We show up, check the motor, board, limits, safety edges, and the physical gate movement. On a BFT, we start with the control board and work outward. We tell you what’s wrong in plain terms and what it costs to fix.
  3. 3
Parts decision. We use BFT OEM parts where they matter most, like control boards and safety sensors. For items like capacitors, gear sets, and hydraulic fluid, we’ll use properly rated quality aftermarket parts when they match or exceed the OEM spec. We tell you which is which and why. No mystery parts.
  4. 4
The repair or install. We fix it in your driveway. If a hinge is worn on a swing gate, we weld on site. We don’t haul your gate to a shop unless there is no other way. If it’s a new motor, we set the limits, the obstacle sensing, and the run speed to match your gate’s weight and travel.
  5. 5
Testing that’s actually thorough. We run the gate through full cycles, stop it mid-travel, test the safety edges, check the force settings, and verify the manual release. Then we show you how to operate it and what to watch for.
  6. 6
90-Day Done Right Promise. Everything we do on your BFT opener is covered in writing. If something’s not right, one call brings Hal back. No runaround.

What BFT Gate Motor & Opener Costs in Los Angeles

BFT costs in LA vary by model and what failed, but here are real ranges from our work:

  • Control board capacitor replacement: $150 to $290 installed
  • Limit switch adjustment or replacement: $120 to $240
  • Photocell or safety edge repair or replacement: $180 to $380
  • Full control board replacement: $380 to $750 depending on BFT model
  • Gearbox rebuild or gear set replacement: $350 to $650
  • Complete BFT motor/operator replacement: $1,100 to $2,400 installed

What moves the price: the specific BFT model you have, whether we’re repairing or replacing, the age of your gate’s hinges and structure, and what previous installers left behind. A gate that’s not physically square will eat a new motor in a year. We check that before quoting anything. Call (877) 610-2993 and we’ll give you a free estimate on your BFT job. The price we quote is the price you pay. It’s agreed before we start.

Why Los Angeles Homeowners Call Gatewood Fence & Gate for BFT Work

We’ve been at this in Los Angeles since 2001, and the name on the shop is Hal Gatewood. He grew up in the San Fernando Valley, not far from Hansen Dam, and learned the trade at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College before spending years in the field. BFT is one of nine brands we service, which means we’re not stuck on one manufacturer when something crosses over. We service LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, Ghost Controls, and DoorKing too. If a BFT board is backordered and a compatible DoorKing or LiftMaster part can do the job safely, we’ll tell you. Most brand-only shops won’t.

Every BFT job carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. We answer the phone with a live person every hour of every day. And we publish our address and our California license number, because Hal has never worked a day in this city where he couldn’t be found. Call me directly. If I don’t pick up, I’ll call you back - not a call center, just me.
