Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To
Ghost Controls gate openers are sold under a handful of series names: the AXDP and AXDB dual gate kits, the TSS1 and TSW single gate kits, and the DP2 and TDS2 heavy-duty kits. The welding and fabrication side of the work applies to all of them, because the parts that fail are rarely the opener motor itself. What breaks is the metal around it: the weld-on actuator mounting bracket, the hinge plates that carry all the gate’s weight, the clevis pins, the post brackets, and occasionally the gate frame itself if a previous installer used tube too thin for the job.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha that most Ghost Controls owners don’t know until it bites them: the actuator bracket lengths are not universal across the series. A bracket from a DP2 kit sits at a different stroke alignment than one from a TSS1, and if you weld the wrong one on, the arm binds and the motor burns out early. We match the bracket to the model number stamped on the opener’s control board, then measure the gate’s pull-to-open geometry before we ever strike an arc. OEM brackets from Ghost Controls are fine, but for weld-on repairs we typically fabricate a steel or powder-coated replacement that matches or exceeds the original thickness. Signs Your Ghost Controls Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate leans at the hinge post. The post itself has shifted in the ground, or the hinge plate welds have started cracking. A gate sags in the hinge post, not in the middle, and that is where we start.
- The opener arm makes a clicking or popping sound at the attach point. The actuator bracket has wallowed out around the pin holes, or the weld has cracked and is flexing with every cycle. Left alone, the arm eventually breaks free entirely.
- The gate closes unevenly and leaves a gap at the latch side. One hinge plate has dropped a few millimeters. The motor keeps pushing, the geometry gets worse, and the opener’s limit switch never quite knows where the gate actually is.

First, a gate under spring tension or carrying a Ghost Controls arm holds stored energy, and if you cut or grind the wrong bracket first, the gate can swing fast enough to hurt someone. Second, the welds on a gate need to be more than just solid; they need to be square, properly penetrated, and aligned to the opener’s stroke, or you’ll be repairing the motor in six months. The repair is not complicated for a welder with gate experience, but it requires training and the right equipment.

But we often recommend fabricating and welding on a new plate rather than re-welding a fatigued one, because the old steel has already proven it isn’t up to the job.
